Information for Authors

Diabetes Spectrum will publish original articles related to the educational, behavioral, and clinical aspects of diabetes management. Articles should be of interest to all health professionals in diabetes care, with an emphasis on those involved in counseling and education.

Types of Articles
Original articles report on quantitative or qualitative research relevant to diabetes care, as well as conceptual material distilling the literature. Conceptual work should offer new insight, applying topics to clinical practice. Articles should not exceed 18–20 pages (double-spaced, typewritten), including tables, figures, and references.

Feature articles report on events, institutions, achievements, and issues in diabetes education and health care. Assigned by editors.

Department articles focus on well-defined issues. Assigned by the editors.

Copyright
The American Diabetes Association holds the copyright on all material appearing in Diabetes Spectrum. All authors must sign a form acknowledging 1) no prior publication and 2) copyright transfer to the ADA (in accordance with the Copyright Revision Act of 1976).

All authors also must sign a Duality of Interest Disclosure Form indicating any relevant dualities of interest related to the subject of their papers. Relevant dualities will be disclosed in a note at the end of the published paper.

Original Manuscript Format
Five copies of the manuscript, including tables, figures, and legends (original, plus 4 photocopies), must be submitted. If black-and-white graphs or charts are used, submit 3 sets of glossy prints; the other 2 sets should be photocopies. If photographs are used, 1 glossy set must be included along with 4 photocopies. Manuscripts must be typewritten double-spaced (including references, tables, and figure legends) on one side of 81/2 3 11-inch nonerasable white paper. The manuscript should be arranged in the following order: title page, abstract, introduction, research design and methods, results, conclusions, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure legends. Number pages consecutively, beginning with the title page.

Once a manuscript has been accepted, authors must submit labeled diskettes with a typed version of their manuscripts. Labels should indicate 1) author’s name, 2) article title, and 3) software and hardware used. Diskettes may be from IBM, IBM-compatible, or Apple.

Title page. Along with a brief title, include name; middle initial; last name; highest academic degree and certification of each author; affiliation of each author during the study being reported; and name, address, telephone number, and fax number of author to whom correspondence and reprint requests should be addressed.

Abstract. The abstract should not exceed 250 words. It must be self-contained and clear without reference to the text and should be written for a general journal readership. The abstract must state the purpose of study, research design and methods, results, and conclusions.

Text. Articles should be written in clear, concise English following the CBE Style Manual (5th ed., 1983, Bethesda, MD, Council of Biology Editors). The authors are responsible for all statements made in their articles, including any editing changes made by staff.

Units. Measurements should be expressed in Système International (SI) form, followed by conventional units in parenthesis.

Acknowledgments. These should contain brief statements of assistance, financial support, and prior publication of the study in abstract form, if needed.

References. References should be listed according to the following examples. All authors and inclusive page numbers must be cited. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Serial Sources for the BIOSIS Data Base; for unlisted journals, complete journal titles should be provided. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references.

Figures. Figures should be professionally drawn and photographed. Symbols and labels should be clearly visible when figure is reduced to one column in width. Figures must be unmounted, unstapled, and no larger than 5 3 7 inches (12.7 3 7.3 cm). Photographs should be cropped to one or two columns in width. Headings and descriptions should be placed in figure legends rather than on the figures.

Tables. Tables should be double-spaced on separate pages with table number and title.

Manuscript Submission
All contributions, including solicited articles, are critically reviewed by the editors and invited referees. Reviewers’ comments are usually returned to the authors.
